During summer internship, I designed a mobile solution for the Intern Innovation Challenge to increase financial inclusion in developing countries .

The Why

The Central Bank of Nigeria is looking to work with other countries to understand how to grow the country’s financial system. According to study, 37% of Nigerian population is unbanked.

Merchant Persona 

Ade John, is a owner of “Yarn So Soft” store in Lagos, Nigeria. Here are some assumptions about him

  • Has a small business selling cloth/ fabric

  • Located near a fashion design university and has high business turnover.

  • Prefers transactions in cash; has trouble accepting credit/debit

  • Has a bank account but transacts with cash due to high cost of banking and trust issues with banking services

Designed Solution

A mobile solution to Improve trust among unbanked merchants by incentivizing savings with interest rewards and supporting easy payments with QR code.

  • Easy registration to include merchants into financial system,

  • Make and receive payments with QR code or phone number.

  • Transaction data history will become the key foundation for the merchant to apply for other financial services and start being financial included.
